How do I change icons in XP?

I am referring to individual files that I create. For example, I created an exe file using macromedia captivate. Now instead of it being the default blue circle with a 'c' in it, I want to change it to a book or something else. Furthermore, when I email the file, I want it to retain this icon.

I know how to change the icon of folders and shortcuts, as well as the generic icons for files on this computer...i.e: all pdf files will have a circle icon or all jpg files will have a triangle icon. How do I change icons in XP?
I see the difference in your questions. At this point it seems that XP allows the changing of Folder, Shortcut, Drive and System icons but not the actual files. This information is tied to the application within the system registry and many times is difficult to change or even to make it stick after you have sent the file to someone else. I checked out this site but just as you mentioned, the option at the file level is gone.

It still exists for some items in XP but not at the file level like what you are attempting to do. There are a few software packages out there that can help you change the icons on your desktop but I do not believe the changes will show on another person's machine like you want it to.How do I change icons in XP?

Ok, first you need to create an icon (.ico) file. This can be easily enough done using GIMP 2.0 (it's free)

Next, the only way you can attach these icons into your program is through the program you are using to make it (Since the program you made is already .exe, the only way to possibly change the icon now is to view it as binary (special software needed) and manually change the 1s and 0s). Explore your program a little, there should be a way for you to change the icon.
