How do i change the icon of a file?

I have vista and want to change the icon of certain files such as .doc (word document) and .odt (openoffice file) and many more

is there a way to do this for free?

If you want to change an icon, right click the icon, then click %26quot;properties%26quot;, and then click %26quot;customize%26quot; on top of the screen. And finally, at the bottom of the window, you'll find the two words, %26quot;Change Icon%26quot; and click. Now, you can either browse it or find it at the autopatch folder.
